HIV/AIDS TESTING FOR ADOLESCENTS

In the past, several Florida communities have made proposals to offer HIV testing at school sites as an educational effort. Public Health officials report that HIV testing and counseling provide an opportunity for individuals engaged in high risk behaviors to learn of their serostatus, modify their behavior, and if HIV infected, initiate HIV early intervention and treatment.

Since 1987, Miami-Dade County Public Schools has provided comprehensive HIV prevention education. Miami-Dade County Public Health Units have provided confidential or anonymous and low cost (or no cost) HIV counseling and testing to any adolescent requesting it, regardless of his or her ability to pay.

Staff should refer students who are concerned that they may have been exposed to HIV, believe that they are at risk for HIV infection, or express an interest in HIV testing to the Department of Health, 305-377-5174.
